Castro Giving Up on Communism?

Interviews

"The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore.”

Jeffrey Goldberg saved the bombshell for the second part of his two-part interview with Fidel Castro: “The Cuban model doesn’t even work for us anymore,” Castro told him. According to a scholar at the conversation, "He wasn't rejecting the ideas of the Revolution. I took it to be an acknowledgment that under 'the Cuban model' the state has much too big a role in the economic life of the country." Goldberg speculates that Castro is paving the way so that his brother, Raul, can loosen the state’s grip on the economy once he takes over. The article also includes Goldberg’s trip with Castro to a dolphin aquarium, where Che Guevara’s daughter works as a veterinarian.
