Cat Becomes Monopoly’s New Token

Of course the internet chose the cat. Monopoly’s token iron is out—and a cat will join such stalwarts as the Scottie dog and the shoe. Hasbro announced the change on Wednesday, after closing an online vote on Tuesday night, with people from 120 countries participating. The unpopular iron lost after being neck and neck for elimination with the shoe and the wheelbarrow in the Facebook vote. Monopoly’s original tokens were created when the niece of game creator Charles Darrow suggested using charms from her charm bracelet in 1935. Scottie the dog and the wheelbarrow were added in the early 1950s. The cat beat out a helicopter, a guitar, a robot, and a diamond ring.
