Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner took the easiest defense when asked by the House on Wednesday about efforts at the New York Fed to hide payments to AIG’s counterparties: He didn’t know. “I was not involved in discussion about, decisions about what to do with that particular transaction, the counter-parties or the details,” Geithner said, adding “In retrospect, I wish I had known, frankly.” When asked if he supported his colleagues’ decision to withhold the information, Geithner said, "It is very hard to put yourself in shoes you did not occupy. I do not feel like I can put myself in their shoes."
