Kevin Costner urged Congress to deploy his company’s vacuum-like machines to clean up the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. "I'm a guy that's in love with 'What if,'" Costner said. The actor told lawmakers that he’s invested more than $20 million in the devices with his brother, Dan, a scientist, for his firm Ocean Therapy Solutions. Costner noted he wouldn’t be making a profit. The Field of Dreams star, testifying among many experts in the hearings, said it was time to offer solutions instead of scoring political points. Legislators were mostly skeptical, with Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (D-CA) asking if he was using his celebrity to get his firm more attention, and saying the U.S. might not be able to afford Costner’s products. When told the country is $1.5 trillion in debt, the actor responded, “Wow, really?”
