A replica of the Costa Brava fishing port of Cadaqués, home to surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, will be built in mainland China. The Spanish town that inspired many of Dalí’s works—and that boasts the most art galleries per square kilometer in Spain—will be built by architects from developers China Merchants Zhangzhou, who visited Cadaqués in June and took measurements. The replica will span 100 acres of land with a capacity to house 15,000 Chinese art enthusiasts. “Building work will start in September or October,” according to a company spokesman. The people of Cadaqués, meanwhile, are all for the project. “We like the idea and the way they are treating us,” said Joan Borrell, mayor of Cadaqués. “We are small but well-known. If they want to imitate you then it means you must have got something right.” An earlier attempt was made to build Cadaqués in the Dominican Republic, but since the fishing town wasn’t consulted, it is not recognized as a proper imitation.
