President Obama has invited the new Republican Congressional leadership, including incoming House Speaker John Boehner, to a Nov. 18 meeting at the White House. Atop the agenda: the lame-duck session and what to do about the Bush tax cuts, scheduled to expire in the new year. "This is going to be a meeting in which I want us to talk substantively about how we can move the American people's agenda forward," Obama said Thursday, after a meeting with his Cabinet officials. "It's not just going to be a photo-op. Hopefully it may spill over into dinner." Separately, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to give a speech Thursday outlining the Republican legislative platform. “We can hope the president will start listening to the electorate after Tuesday's election. But we can't plan on it,” he’ll say.
