No one who ever accused Ron Santo of being a homer would have been wrong. After 13 years as the Chicago Cubs’ third baseman and nearly two decades in their broadcast booth, he was an unapologetic fan. Santo, who died at age on Thursday of complications from bladder cancer, was known for his loud opinions and howling into the microphone as he willed on the Cubs. The team’s chairman said that he would always be "the heart and soul of Cubs fans. As a player, he posted a lifetime batting average of .277, hit 342 home runs and drove in 1,331 runs—though he was never elected to the Hall of Fame after 19 appearances on the ballot.
