Nearly three years after Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto fell victim to a gun and suicide-bomb attack, a Pakistani court has handed down arrest warrants for two senior police officials. The pair is accused of negligence, because they allegedly failed to supply proper security and cleared the crime scene too quickly. "We have filed an application for the trial of two police officials—one was responsible for deliberate negligence in Benazir Bhutto's security and the other was responsible for washing down the crime scene instead of preserving it," the prosecutor handling the case said. The decision underlines the United Nations’ opinion that the assassination could have been prevented. (Last April, a U.N. commission placed the blame squarely on the government and its intelligence agencies for falling short on Bhutto’s security and then hampering the investigation.) Five militants are awaiting trial for the killing.
