After sustaining a point-blank gunshot wound to the head, in which the bullet entered her temple and exited through her forehead, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords faces a long road to recovery if she survives the attack, according to Fox News’ health editor. The survival rate for gunshot wounds to the brain is about 5 percent, and much lower if a bullet passes through the brain side to side rather than front to back. Giffords was able to respond to commands, her doctors reported, and made it through surgery, though the next four to five days are critical. If she survives, there is a chance she will suffer from neurological deficiencies, like memory loss, for the rest of her life.
