As a 6 p.m. curfew was placed on Tunisia’s capital, police and security forces pitched battles against the former president’s supporters around the city of Tunis. After ruling the North African country for 23 years, Zine el Abidine ben Ali was ousted by youth demanding economic opportunities and political freedom. On Sunday, bursts of violence in the streets left Tunisians paranoid despite the announcement of the temporary new cabinet. Fouad Mebazaa, the leader of the interim government, and opponents of the regime decided that the new cabinet have no connection to ben Ali. The previous Interior Minister was arrested 60 miles from Tunis and the chief of the presidential guard was arrested on Saturday. Both men led forces that prolonged repression under ben Ali's rule.
