It’s a little bump that could be big news. Scientists at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory are set to unveil data Wednesday that suggest the existence of a new elementary particle, smaller than the atom. It might even be the Higgs boson, a much-sought but never found particle. Some observers even say it could be a new force of nature, alongside known forces like gravity and electromagnetism. So far, however, no one knows. What they agree on is that if the data hold up, it could represent a fundamental change in our understanding of physics.
