Here we go again. Georgia passed a harsh immigration law similar to the Arizona regulation currently mired in court. The law would allow police to check the immigration status of “criminal” suspects and force businesses to do the same with potential employees. The bill passed in the final hours of the legislative session despite protests and threats of state boycotts. The bill now goes to Gov. Nathan Deal, who campaigned last year on the promise of implementing an Arizona-style immigration law but has since shown concern about placing “undue burden” on employers. Georgia's agricultural industry has warned that federal guest worker programs alone can't provide enough laborers to meet farmers' needs.
