Pope Benedict XVI made a rare statement about his life in Nazi Germany Saturday while speaking before a German Catholic group in Regensburg that he belong to as a boy. “It looked like the continent was in the hands of [Hitler’s] power, which put the future of Christianity in doubt,” Benedict said. The 84-year-old pope was born in Germany, and has largely been kept silent about his life under Adolf Hitler—especially after it was revealed Benedict was in the Hitler Youth. Benedict said it was a “dark time,” and said Hitler had “already subjugated” the rest of Europe.
