One hopes she had someone pick her up at jail. Manal al-Sharif, the Saudi woman who made headlines for driving despite laws banning women motorists, has been released from jail. Sharif, who led the Women2Drive campaign, was arrested after she posted a video showing her driving around a city. The defiant act—a much-toned-down version of demonstrations for greater rights around the Arab world—inspired copycats, and a major coordinated protest was planned for June 17. But as a condition of Sharif’s release, she had to pledge not to drive and to stop her advocacy. It’s now unclear whether the June 17 event will go forward.
