James “Whitey” Bulger pleaded not guilty to a 32-count federal indictment, including 19 murders, in Boston on Wednesday. Most of the alleged crimes occurred while Bulger was an informant for the FBI. The court proceeding lasted about 15 minutes, as Bulger said “not guilty” in a clear voice multiple times, and he acknowledged his brothers, John Bulger and former Massachusetts State Senate President William Bulger, upon entering the court. Bulger’s court-appointed attorney, J.W. Carney, spoke after the hearing, rejecting accounts by Bulger’s Los Angeles neighbors that the mobster may be senile. Bulger is scheduled to appear again in court on Sept. 15.
