On Wednesday, the hacking group Anonymous publicly posted the names, home addresses, email addresses, and passwords of 102 police officers belonging to San Francisco’s BART agency. The hacking was reportedly in retribution after BART temporarily shut down underground cell service on Thursday to quash a planned protest. Some hackers from the loosely managed collective claimed responsibility for the attack, but another Twitter account used by the group denied Anonymous had any role in it. This is the second time in recent days that hackers from Anonymous have attacked BART; earlier this week, Anonymous broke into a BART website and released more than 2,000 names, addresses, and phone numbers of BART customers.
