Counterterrorism officials confirmed Thursday that they are investigating a “credible” but unconfirmed terror threat to New York or Washington. One report said at least three individuals—including one believed to be a U.S. citizen—entered the U.S. in August to plan a car-bomb attack against Washington, D.C., or New York. The suspected terrorists are thought to have come from Afghanistan or Pakistan, and at least two rental trucks are being sought nationwide. NYPD Chief Ray Kelly said there be enhanced security, including on public transportation and suspicious bag checks, in the days leading up to the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11th terrorist attacks. Officials hinted that the new threat may come from al Qaeda, as FBI's top official in New York City, Janice Fedarcyk commented that al Qaeda has had an interest in anniversaries.
