President Obama has waived core provisions of No Child Left Behind. States that agree to overhaul low-performing schools and adopt more rigorous teacher evaluation systems can apply for exemptions from the Bush-era law's 2014 deadline for student proficiency in reading and math. To get a waiver, schools must meet commitments similar to the administration's proposed rewrite of No Child Left Behind, which it sent to Congress last year. Minnesota Republican John Kline, chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee, criticized the move as being an attempt to unilaterally impose education policy without congressional approval.
