We always knew the Civil War was the deadliest conflict in American history, with more casualties than the rest of the U.S.’s wars combined. But apparently we didn’t know just how bad it was: a researcher at Binghamton University in New York has combed census data from the 19th century and found that Civil War casualties were 20 percent higher than what had been the official number for 110 years: 618,222. David Hacker discovered that closer to 750,000 died. History journals and Civil War scholars are already validating Hacker’s research.
