As violence in Egypt escalated Thursday, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi gave a televised address. The crisis in Egypt, Morsi said, must be solved through discussion, not violence. “Such painful events happened because of political differences that should be resolved through dialogue,” he said. Morsi also said that controversial parts of his refuted declaration—particularly those giving him sweeping powers—could be modified after discussions with the opposition. A referendum on a new constitution is planned for Dec. 15, after which the declaration would be canceled regardless.
