Australian police say Apple Maps “life-threatening.”

At least one crisis solved by the New Year. Google Maps returned to iPhones on Wednesday with the release of an app for the program—ending the three-month experiment with Apple Maps that led to a rare public apology by Apple CEO Tim Cook. Google Inc. praised the new app, which allows the tool for turn-by-turn direction—a feature that Google had previously only made available on their own Android phones. Meanwhile, the much-derided Apple Maps was labeled “life-threatening” by Australian police after the system steered people looking for the city of Mildura to hot, remote desert some 44 miles away.
