The European Union needed some good news after finding out its Brussels offices may have been bugged by the U.S. Croatia officially joined the EU on Monday, becoming the 28th member. Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, celebrated Monday with fireworks, cheering crowds, and the opening of the border with Slovenia, another former Yugoslav country in the EU. The move comes almost 20 years after the country’s brutal war for independence from Yugoslavia. More than two thirds of Croatians said they were excited for the ascension, despite the euro zone’s flagging economy and Croatia’s own economic problems. Concerns over Croatia’s corruption and economy will keep the country from joining the euro.
