Oslo’s Nobel Institute has awarded its prestigious peace prize to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, a Hague-based group tasked with implementing the international chemical-weapons treaty and that is overseeing the destruction of Syria’s stockpile. No small task. Since the 1990s the OCPW has conducted over 5,000 inspections in 86 countries and destroyed 80 percent of the world’s chemical weapons. The weapons watchdog beat out favorite Malala Yousafzai, an outspoken advocate for the rights of women and girls, who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban last year.
