A group of researchers from the University of Buffalo, New York, have been experimenting with an "underwater wi-fi" network—but not so you can continue using your iPhone on a submarine. The "deep-sea Internet" would analyze sound waves to detect tsunamis and make underwater communications easier. Currently, information gathered by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is unable to quickly transfer to the U.S. Navy because they use different infrastructures—something the University's team hopes to eliminate by creating a shared standard. Their research will be presented next month in Taiwan.
