Russia Allows Ukraine Monitors

West hopes presence will prevent escalation.

Russia has allowed international monitors to enter Ukraine after Western nations raised concerns about Russian troops amassing near the border. The mission will initially have 100 monitors, possibly expanding to up to 400 across Ukraine, according to the Vienna-based Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The mission will last six months, and is intended to thaw tensions between Russia and Ukraine over the former’s annexation of Crimea, a sovereign territory within Ukraine’s border.
