Sixteen of Guatemala’s 22 provinces declared a state of emergency on Monday, as a drought ravaged the country’s crops. According to the agriculture minister, more than 236,000 families are affected by the lack of water, which is Central America’s worst in decades. Lawmakers must now approve the state of emergency declarations to free up funds to farmers and stabilize the price of crops. The country reportedly needs $60 million to tackle its food shortage.
