A French court upheld a ban on a Muslim engineer from accessing nuclear sites on Monday. The 29-year-old man, who cannot be named under French law, was barred from entering nuclear installations that were part of his work as a subcontractor of the energy corporation EDF. In March, the engineer had his power plant pass revoked by officials in the town of Chalons-en-Champagne, where the nuclear site is located, over allegations that he had ties to a jihadist network and recruited young men to fight in Iraq. “There is no proof of these supposed links,” said Sefen Guez Guez, the man’s lawyer, who also cited his client’s lack of a criminal record. While the ban was overturned on appeal, EDF revoked his access in June. Like the U.K., the U.S., and many other Western countries, France has expressed increasing concern over Muslims becoming radicalized and fighting for jihadist groups abroad.
