Fake Money Not Behind Shanghai Stampede

CHAOTIC COUNTDOWN

Left 36 dead and dozens injured.

A stampede in Shanghai that left 36 people dead and at least 47 injured on New Year’s Eve was not due to a surge of people running to pick up fake U.S. money, police said Friday. The deadly crush occurred minutes before midnight in the Bund, a waterfront area in central Shanghai where thousands were ringing in the new year. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the stampede, but denied reports that people were rushing to pick up coupons similar $100 U.S. notes that were thrown from a building overhead.
