Ex-Cuban President Fidel Castro appeared in public for the first time in over a year on Monday to greet a delegation of Venezuelans, according to an official media report on Saturday. The 88-year-old spent about an hour and a half at a school with 33 Venezuelans, reportedly impressing them with a firm handshake and sharp mind, according to a first-person reporter’s account in newspaper Juventud Rebelde. This marks Castro’s first public appearance since last January, at the opening of a Havana cultural center.
