The jailed Kentucky county clerk is seeking an emergency injunction from Governor Steve Beshear to allow her to deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples based on her religious liberties, her lawyers said on Monday. Nonprofit legal advocacy group Liberty Counsel, which represents Kim Davis, asked the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals to grant her an exemption from the mandate “that all county clerks issue marriage licenses.” The 49-year-old has been behind bars for five days after she was found in contempt of court for defying a judge’s order to issue licenses to gay couples.
