More than 39,000 Chinese nationals—900 of them violent offenders—have formed a deportation backlog because authorities in Beijing won’t provide U.S. officials with the documents needed to send the undocumented immigrants home. Reuters reports the standstill appeared to reach a resolution this summer when Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials arrested two dozen Chinese nationals for deportation—but the proof of citizenship necessary never materialized. “They do not want these people back,” a U.S. government official suggested. Chinese authorities, on the other hand, are asking for help with fugitives fleeing corruption investigations there.
