U.S. Probes Alleged UN Bribery Scheme

U.S. authorities are investigating allegations that United Nations officials were paid off to support real-estate developments in Macau, The Wall Street Journal reported early Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. The U.S. attorney in Manhattan and the FBI are reportedly looking into Chinese businesspeople, including Macau real-estate mogul Ng Lap Seng and his assistant, Jeff Yin, who were arrested on charges of lying about the purpose of bringing $4.5 million into the U.S. Additional charges are expected to be announced as early as Tuesday against a number of people, including current or former UN officials, the Journal reports. The number of UN officials involved and their identities were not known.
