The Massachusetts teenager who raped and killed his math teacher in 2013 was sentenced Friday to at least 40 years in state prison. Phillip Chism was 14 years old when he followed 24-year-old teacher Colleen Ritzer into a bathroom before strangling, stabbing, and raping her. He was convicted in December 2015 despite his lawyers’ attempt to portray his crime as one resulting from a psychotic disorder. Ritzer’s family condemned the sentence as “unacceptable” and too light a punishment for Chism’s “pure evil.”
