The leaders of China and Taiwan will meet for the first time since the nations split in 1949, according to Taiwan’s official government news agency. The Saturday meeting between China’s President Xi Jinping and Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou will reportedly take place in Singapore, and would seemingly signal China’s intent to reunify with Taiwan. China has not made an announcement about the meeting yet. The White House tentatively lauded the decision to hold a meeting, with White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest saying the U.S. “would certainly welcome steps that are taken on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to try to reduce tensions and improve cross-strait relations. But, you know, we’ll have to see what actually comes out of the meeting.”
