China is clamping down on popular media, limiting “entertaining” television and working on ways to control microblogging. Starting next year, Chinese television stations will be limited to two 90-minute entertainment shows per week, part of the Communist Party's new attempt to root out “excessive entertainment and vulgar tendencies.” The government also called for an “Internet management system” that would regulate social networks and punish people who spread “harmful information.” Officials are also discussing forcing microbloggers to register accounts with their real names and identification numbers.
