China Demotes 1,000 Senior Officials

Fighting corruption.

As part of an effort to crack down on graft, the Chinese government has demoted 1,000 senior officials whose families live abroad and refused to return to China. The officials were part of a group of 3,200 so-called naked officials (the term used for those whose families are overseas) that China announced it had discovered on Monday. According to the government, these individuals are at a high risk for embezzlement. According to the government, from 1978 to 2003, at least 4,000 corrupt officials fled the country taking at least $50 billion with them.
