The head of China’s economic data has been detained as part of a bribery investigation and a widespread an anti-corruption crackdown, according to state-run media. Chairman of the National Bureau of Statistics and former Deputy Finance Minister Wang Bao’an, 52, allegedly made “severe disciplinary violations.” Several other finance leaders have been detained in the last several years as part of the nationwide effort. The move comes amid a meltdown in Chinese stock markets and its slowing economy; China’s economic statistics have been met with skepticism by Western officials.
