China celebrated the 100th anniversary of the revolution that ended thousands of years of dynastic rule. Sun Yat-sen, the father of the revolution, is revered both on the mainland and in Taiwan, and President Hu Jintao called on the two sides to "heal wounds of the past and work together." A surprised guest was 85-year-old former president Jiang Zemin, who was rumored in July to be dead after a heart attack. Jiang did not speak, but remains an influential figure whose death could cause his followers to shift allegiances and affect the power struggles within the Communist Party.
