In a move to “rehabilitate” the country’s rapidly growing live-streaming sector, China has decided to prohibit online banana consumption. President Xi Jinping called for the promotion of “civilized behavior” after some platforms were showing videos of women eating bananas. Local media have said the decision was part of a larger effort to force online content to become less vulgar. The China Daily, which is state-run, reports there are upward of 100 live-streaming platforms in the country, which feature young hosts.
