It’s Chinese New Year, and part of the annual celebrations in China is a state TV gala show which, by some estimations, is the most viewed show in the world with an estimated 800 million viewers. But this year’s show has attracted criticism after it featured a skit about Chinese/African ties with an Asian actor in blackface with huge artificial buttocks, what appears to be a black actor in a monkey suit, and a host of dancers in “tribal” costumes. The BBC reported that the supposed comedy skit revolves around a young black woman asking a Chinese man to pose as her husband when meeting her mother, played by a Chinese actress in blackface. The sketch has been described as as “disgusting” and “completely racist” online.
