Fast-food giant Chipotle has announced plans to stop serving food that contains genetically modified organisms in its restaurants, just two years after leading the trend in labeling foods that contain such ingredients. Founder Steve Ells called it “another step toward the visions we have of changing the way people think about and eat fast food.” He does not expect the policy change to result in shortages such as those that affected its pork supply for carnitas. To accomplish the goal, Chipotle will be expanding the types of oils it uses in cooking, but the cost of going GMO-free was, according to Ells, “de minimis.”
