As the U.S. Open of Surfing kicks off in Huntington Beach, California, there's one photographer who really has seen it all. Chris Burkard has traveled the far reaches of the planet to capture surfers in action. In his recent book, Distant Shores: Surfing the Ends of the Earth, Burkard traveled from Alaska to Russia and New Zealand to India, taking photos of the surf and sand (and sometimes even ice) that unifies a culture that prides itself on carving waves, catching air, and chasing the biggest breaks—no matter what the weather is like. An exhibition of Burkard’s most recent work will be on display in conjunction with the competition at the Shorebreak Hotel in Huntington Beach from August 1-3.
