It’s not “mission accomplished” yet, but CIA Director Leon Panetta claims that al Qaeda has not been this weak since the war on terror began after September 11, 2001. The group is down to under 100 militants inside Afghanistan, he said, while the rest are operating in the mountains along Pakistan’s western border. "We are engaged in the most aggressive operations in the history of the CIA in that part of the world, and the result is that we are disrupting their leadership," Panetta told ABC’s This Week. Still, it was not all good news. Panetta added that the CIA has been essentially clueless as to Osama bin Laden’s whereabouts for years and that, because of their reduced numbers, al Qaeda is finding smarter ways to hit back.
