Julian Bond, civil rights activist and former chairman of the NAACP, passed away Saturday night according to a statement from the Southern Poverty Law Center. Bond, who was 75, was the first president of SPLC and died in Fort Walton, Florida after a brief illness. When he was a student at Morehouse College in the 1960s, Bond helped create the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and became a soldier on the front lines of the ongoing civil rights battle.
