The Cleveland Indians will abandon their controversial “Chief Wahoo” logo in the 2019 season, The New York Times reported Monday. The team’s cartoonish depiction of a Native American mascot first appeared on their uniforms in 1948. In recent years, the Indians have faced intense pressure to cease use of the logo as awareness of its racially insensitive and offensive nature has become more widespread. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred told the Times that Indians team owner Paul Dolan “ultimately agreed with my position that the logo is no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball, and I appreciate Mr. Dolan’s acknowledgment that removing it from the on-field uniform by the start of the 2019 season is the right course.”
