It's the final stretch in the legal battle to overturn California’s Proposition 8, the law that made gay marriage illegal: Closing arguments began Wednesday in the trial that will declare whether defining marriage as between one man and one woman is unconstitutional. Both sides claim there are legal precedents, although the judge will be the first to ultimately decide whether discrimination based on sexual orientation is equal to discrimination due to race, age, religion, or income level. “This is really the first time the federal courts are looking at whether a majority of voters can take away the rights of one specific minority while keeping them for themselves. It should be of interest to anyone who can be impacted by discrimination,” said Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California.
