Colorado’s continuing rain and floodwaters claimed the life of an 83-year-old man Monday, bringing the death toll since the floods began to eight, according to officials. The man was killed when the ground collapsed under him and a creek swept him three miles downstream, where his body was found. Weather began lifting Monday, however, and helicopter rescue crews were able to begin carrying stranded people to safety. According to early estimates, 17,494 homes have been damaged, and 1,502 have been destroyed.
