After failing to come to terms on contentious conditions of the Patriot Act, Congress has boldly opted to just wait 90 days. Members have been considering clauses of the post-9/11 law that allow expansive domestic intelligence gathering, but have been unable to agree due to opposition from a coalition of libertarian conservatives and liberal Democrats who handed Speaker John Boehner an embarrassing defeat and nearly derailed the bill. The temporary extension now gives leadership in both parties until May 27 to hammer out a deal that can garner enough votes to pass.
