Former North Charleston, South Carolina police officer Michael Slager was charged with murder by a grand jury Monday for the shooting death of Walter Scott earlier this year. Slager shot Scott in the back eight times as he ran away from the officer, following a foot chase that resulted from a traffic stop. The solicitor overseeing the grand jury said murder was the only charge given to the jury to consider. If convicted, Slager would serve anywhere from 30 years to life in prison without parole. Slager is currently being held in protective custody in jail.
