A police officer in Alabama proposed to kill a black resident, according to a recording obtained by The Guardian, and still kept his job. Troy Middlebrooks said he wanted to use false evidence to suggest the killing would’ve been done in self-defense. After the mayor and police chiefs of Alexander City heard the secret recording, authorities paid the black resident $35,000 in an out-of-court settlement. Middlebrooks has kept his job and is still patrolling in the city.
